Cat Surrender Profile

Black Cat Rescue exists because black cats often do not survive being surrendered to open-admission animal shelters. Please verify that a shelter or rescue organization is No Kill before surrendering a cat. It is a good idea to list your cat on multiple No Kill waiting lists. Click here for a list of No Kill animal shelters and rescue organizations in Massachusetts. Please be sure to inform all organizations as soon as you find a placement for your cat.

Surrendering With Black Cat Rescue

Here are some important questions to ask yourself before surrendering an animal:

Help! I found a stray cat.

As is the case with most small, No Kill animal rescue organizations, we usually have a waiting list of cats in need of foster care. Since the cat you have found needs help right now, we advise caring individuals with stray cats in their care to attempt to find the cat a home on their own if at all possible. This guide from Best Friends Animal Society will help you make it happen! If you are unable to find the stray cat a home on your own, please complete our Cat Surrender Profile above in order to be added to our waiting list.

Note about stray cats:

Friendly cats that appear healthy & well-groomed are most likely someone else's pet. Sometimes indoor cats escape and have trouble finding their way home. Other times, owners allow their cats outdoors and they appear to be stray or lost because they solicit food from neighbors.

Fearful cats who are afraid of approaching humans are usually feral and have lived outdoors their whole lives. Bringing them into a shelter might put them in harm’s way because they are not cut out to be someone’s pet.

Help! I need to surrender my pet cat.

Please carefully explore all other options before deciding to surrender your cat. This guide from Best Friends Animal Society can help you find a new home for your cat on your own. If you are unable to find your cat a new home on your own, please complete our Cat Surrender Profile above in order to be added to our waiting list.

Does Black Cat Rescue accept cats from other states?

Black Cat Rescue is an approved “In State” rescue organization in Massachusetts. We cannot legally import animals from out of state. Cat Surrender Policy

Please complete our Cat Surrender Profile above in order to be considered for our waiting list.  To submit a profile for consideration, you must read and consent to the Black Cat Surrender Agreement. You will receive an email acknowledgment that your profile has been submitted and will be reviewed by Black Cat Rescue.

A representative will contact you and, if it is an appropriate match, arrange for the surrender of the cat. Because Black Cat Rescue operates on a small volunteer network of foster homes — instead of an animal shelter — while we seek permanent adoptive homes, there may be a significant delay while we wait for an appropriate foster care placement to become available. We appreciate your patience.  If you have any questions prior to surrender, please contact us.

If Black Cat Rescue is able to assist in the placement of your cat, we will ask that you have the cat medically evaluated and treated, as necessary, by a veterinarian prior to surrender. We can refer you to a convenient veterinarian who can provide vaccinations, spaying or neutering, and other services at a reduced cost. If you are unable to pay for veterinary care, Black Cat Rescue can make advance arrangements with our preferred providers.

A Black Cat Rescue representative will meet with you for the physical surrender of the cat. It can greatly facilitate the process if you are able to transport the cat for the surrender.  All property transferred with the cat to Black Cat Rescue at the time of surrender will be considered to be a donation, and Black Cat Rescue will not be responsible for the retention or return of any property.

As stated in the Black Cat Surrender Agreement, you will permanently relinquish all ownership, rights, interests, and claims in the cat at the time of the surrender. Black Cat Rescue will have complete discretion to act in the best interest of the cat. Please note that Black Cat Rescue will not release any information as to the identity or location of our foster or adoptive homes. Black Cat Rescue is also unable to provide updates as to the status of any cat that has been surrendered.
